SUNLAND SPRINGS VILLAGE TENNIS CLUB GENERAL MEETING MINUTES

 FEBRUARY 1, 2012 3:30 P.M.

President W. Dale Miller called the meeting to order at 3:30 P.M.  Board member Mike Darr was absent.

President W. Dale Miller welcomed new member Jan Sutcliffe.

Minutes of the January 4, 2012 General Meeting were previously emailed to all club members.  Dale Miller asked for corrections or additions to the minutes as emailed.  There were none.  Dwayne Moon moved to accept the minutes.  Craig Smith seconded the motion and it passed.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Cindy Geiser gave the treasurer’s report.  Cindy reported that we are now starting to spend more money for Sunland Spring Village Tennis Tournament.  Money from entrance fees will soon be coming in.

OLD BUSINESS

Captains, please return donut money to Cindy Geiser.  Dale Miller will order donuts as in the past month.  If further information is needed, please contact Dale Miller.

Bruce Evans made a motion to amended law (6.2A2) to be changed to either (which may be either single or multiple).  A slate means a nominee for each office.  If you have three officers to elect – President, Secretary, Treasurer- a simple slate is one nominee for each office.  A multiple slate is more than one nominee for each office.  Dee Brosowske seconded the motion.  The bylaw was voted on by ballot and approved by the club.

The SSV Tennis Club voted by ballot for new officers for 2012 – 2013: President, W. Dale Miller; Vice President, Ron Peterson; Secretary, Mavis Carver; Treasurer, Cindy Geiser and Member at Large, Dee Brosowske.

Nomination Committee will be selected in the fall.  Members can contact anyone on the Nominating Committee if interested in running for office.

NEW BUSINESS

John Berger and Dale Miller gave a report on some of the information gathered at the EVSTL Meeting.  Next year teams will be numbered i.e. 1, 2, and 3, not red, white and blue.  We need to report to EVSTL the number of teams by October 1, 2012 and December 1, 2012.  There will be two schedules November 5 – December 21, 2012 and January 7 – March 8, 2013.  7 games will be played between November 5 – December 21, 2012 and 9 games played from January 7 – March 8, 2013.

Change minimum numbers to form a team as follows:

2.0 – 3.0   7 Men – 5 Women

3.5             7 Men – 4 Women

1.5 – 4.0   4 Men – 2 Women

In league match a club may have at a minimum as follows:

2.0 – 3.0   3 Men’s – 2 Women’s (1 Mixed?)

3.5             3 Men’s – 2 Women’s

1.5 – 4.0   2 Men’s – 1 Women’s

Any level of play may field two #1 teams if both Captains agree.  A player may not be borrowed from another “sister” team to play in the #1 position.  A player moved up can play in any position.  Each player has to play three matches after January rule, will be revisited at the next meeting.

In accordance with EVSTL policy, players who have met all of the following criteria MUST be moved up to the next higher level no later than the beginning of the next season:

a.      Play at least 6 matches in court 1. (At least 3 matches in court             l must be played after January 1).

b.      Win 75% or more of matches played in court 1.

c.       Win 60% or more of games played in court 1.

(Note: move-up stats will be “locked” once achieved).

Players who wish to challenge must submit the Challenge Form to the Vice President (or designee) on or before January 15. The challenge matches will be played between January 10 – March 10.  The Challenge Committee will be responsible for scheduling the challenge matches and providing scorekeepers.  The Challenge Committee will select three players rated #2 at the next level above the challenger to participate in the match.

Ground rules for Challenge Matches as follows:

Play three regular sets, changing partners for each set.  Challengers serve first in each set.  Challengers choose which side to serve from at the start of each set.  Second deuce is game point.  Receiving team chooses which player will receive the serve.  If the set score is tied at 6-6, play a regular 12-point tiebreaker. The tiebreaker counts as a game won or lost.  Challengers will be moved up to the next level for the next season if they either (l) win two sets out of the three or (2) win one set and a total of 13 games altogether, which would include the games won during the winning set.  If challengers do not win two sets out of three or win one set and a total of 13 games altogether, including games won during the winning set, they must remain at their current level for two seasons before they may challenge again.

Opposing teams playing illegal players in move up positions or borrowing from their “sister” team was discussed.  Martha Cooper will write up a proposal and present it to the club, to be taken to the EVSTL meeting at a later date.

John and Dale did not get to present their proposals at the EVSTL meeting for lack of time.

Carol Korver and Cathy Ido are interested in developing a STAR (Senior Tennis Active Retirees) women’s 3.5 team.  They are requesting 8:30 – 10:00 A.M. for court times on Mondays and Thursdays at the new courts.

If anyone would like to be on a committee to determine the use of the new courts, please contact Dale.

Dale has asked all club members to please email him with any ideas or suggestions regarding Social Tennis, All Play and STAR.

Carol Rieger and Dee Brosowske from the Challenge Committee gave a report on the challenges that have been held.  There are several challenges scheduled for this month.  Challengers should bring new balls with them for their challenge if they prefer new balls; otherwise club balls will be used.

Diane Thompson reported on the 3.0 Smash Tournament.  SSV had 2 ladies and 2 men’s teams.  Galen Anderson and Bill Grunow won first place in the consolation division.

All committees are working hard preparing for the SSV Tournament according to Bill Smaha.

JoAnn Landwehr reported that the Fun Chili Day was a success.  Plans are in the making for the closing social on April l.  More information coming at a later date.

Dee and Denis Brosowske asked members to sign up for scorekeeping for the SSV Tournament.

Cindy Geiser reported on the Monte Vista Invitational to be held on Saturday February 4, 2012.  The pairings are posted on the board at the courts and have been emailed.  3.5 are preparing the food for a fun day. If you are playing you have to purchase a ticket for $4.00.

There is still room to sign up for the SVE tournament March 12, according to Barta Berger.
